1513603: Historical Theology 2 Vol Set Historical Theology 2 Vol Set
By William Cunningham / Banner Of Truth

"From the Publisher:" The study of the history of theology is of more than academic interest. It throws light on both truth and error. It helps us to recognise old heresies when we meet them in modern dress, and introduces us to the classical elucidations of truth which overthrow them for all time. Preachers cannot afford to neglect this field of study. William Cunningham, Principal of New College, Edinburgh, from 1847 till his death in 1861, was one of the greatest of Scottish theologians. Historical Theology is his masterpiece. These lecturescover most of the major doctrinal discussions of Christianhistory up to Cunningham's day, paying special attention to Romanism, Socinianism (the parent of much modern liberalteachiand Arminianism. Everywhere the magisterial quality of the lecturer's mind - profound, precise, spacious, strong is in evidence. Contents include; Justification Sacrament Principle Socinian Controversy Doctrine of the Atonement Arminian Controversy Church Government

510571: The History of Christian Doctrine The History of Christian Doctrine
By Louis Berkhof / Banner Of Truth

The Study of doctrinal truth, apart from its historical background, leads to a truncated theology. There has been too much of this in the past, and there is a great deal of it even in the present day.

The result has been a lack of sound understanding and proper evaluation of the truth. There was no appreciation of the fact that the Holy Spirit guided the church in the interpretation and development of the truth as it is revealed in the word of God.

The checks and the road-signs of the past were not taken into consideration, and ancient heresies, long since condemned by the church, are constantly repeated and represented as new discoveries. The lessons of the past are greatly neglected, and many feel that they should strike out entirely on their own as if very little had been accomplished in the past. Surely, a theologian must take account of the present situation in the religious world, and ever study the truth anew, but he cannot neglect the lessons of the past with impunity.

May this brief study of the history of doctrines serve to create a greater interest in such historical study, and lead to a better understanding of the truth.

64334: Early Christian Doctrine Early Christian Doctrine
By J.N.D. Kelly / HarperOne

Early Christian Doctrine is a clear, precise and up-to-date account of the early history of Christian doctrine. It is invaluable for an understanding of the formative period when the main lines of Christian dogma were laid down; and it presents a balanced picture of the early controversies in the light of modern scholarship. The doctrines of the Trinity, the authority of the Bible and tradition, the nature of Christ, salvation, original sin and grace, and the sacraments are all extensively treated in these pages.
